Do it for yourself

How to create unique experiences in your home. Can you smell it?

Scents create unique experiences and bring us immediately to emotions, pleasures or disgusts, desires, and memories without any  reasoning or understanding.

Three reasons to go for that:

  1. It’s broadly acknowledged
  2. It gives you great memories, and that’s what makes good stories
  3. It’s so easy to do it! (Recipe below)

1- It’s broadly acknowledged

It’s known by neuroscience that smelling is a very special kind of perception. Scents go directly to the areas of the brain associated with memories and awareness (pre-frontal cortex). That’s why it is so hard for us to conceptualize them. We can name a few of them, but it’s way easier to be brought to a past experience by a scent, than to actually talk about them.

This is due to the fact that scent stimuli are not processed by the brain as vision and hearing. They don’t go through the areas of characterizations as visual stimuli go, for example.

Many brands and sophisticated hotels already know the importance of aromas and they create their own scent identities. Usually provoking feelings of comfort.

There is even a trend of scent marketing. The smell gets strongly associated with the brand and every time you feel it you immediately remember the brand.diffuser-1737193_12802

Then, why not adding to your own place a special scent that brings you comfort?

This is certainly gonna stimulate your senses and increase the feelings of relaxation and safety that we have when we are at home.

It is really incredible how we connect to smell. Here is the story about how I’ve got to the notice the importance of aromas:

2 – It gives you great memories, and that is what makes good stories.

Once, I got into this taxi in NY and there was this wonderful smell in the car!

I just though: ‘How nice is this ride!’

And I couldn’t help to ask him: ‘What smell is that? I love it!’

It seemed so familiar to me, but I couldn’t tell what it was.

He said: ‘Ah, this smell costs me a fortune! Every day I spray a little of my favorite perfume in the car. It’s called Angel, by Thierry Mugler’.

I was stupefied to know that! That smell was my mom’s perfume!

I’ve never got into his cab again, but I’m sure I would immediately recognize it.

After that, I started paying more attention to scents. And I’ve been noticing more and more how they influence our experiences.

3 – It’s so easy to do it

To make scents part of your life too, you can either buy a ready made one that you really like or make one ordering the ingredients online.

Making one is easier than you imagine! We make many of them at home and my mom gives them as a gifts to our relatives. She has a special talent for choosing nice scents and she makes them very soft. Everyone loves them!

One tip: keep a little cup with grains of coffee (or powder, or even a coffee) for you to clear your olfactive system in between smelling different aromas. This helps you not to get confused, and not to stop smelling the scents.

scent-1431056_1280.jpgYou can use sprays or aroma diffusers (like this one on the picture).

The diffusers are also very nice decorative itens!

It’s just a little detail that gives an atmosphere of care and elegance to any room.

And there are certainly safety advantages in relation to incences and candles, since it doesn’t involve fire.

Here are the recipes:

For the diffuser you will need:

  • a glass or pet plastic recipient *
  • 6 wooden sticks approximately 3 times bigger than the high of the recipient
  • 350 ml./ 12 oz. of Ethyl alcohol *
  • 50 ml./ 1,7 oz. of filtered or bottled water
  • 100 ml./ 3,5 oz. of fragrance oil *

* Keep in mind that you will have 500 ml of liquid. You can choose a big 500ml recipient or a 250 ml and save half of the liquid for the second time.

* Ethyl alcohol is pure grain alcohol, also known as rubbing alcohol, it can be found in drugstores. It has way less smell that the regular alcohol found in the supermarkets.

* If you buy a 4 oz. bottle, you can use it all.

Just whisk gently all the liquids together in a clean plastic (or glass) bottle, and let it sit for 3 days. For maturation, keep the bottle open in the dark during the evenings and then closed in a light place during the days. Afterwards pour it in a nice recipient and decorate with a nice lace and a pendant.

Many recipes recommend adding 30 ml of propylene glycol. This is optional, it works as a conservative and it avoids that the liquid gets blurred. We used that before, but we also made the aromas without it and it works well.

For the spray you will need:

  • A glass or pet plastic recipient with trigger spray
  • 200 ml./ 07 oz. of ethyl alcohol *
  • 700 ml./23 oz. of filtered or bottled water
  • 100 ml./ 3,5 oz. of fragrance oil *

* Ethyl alcohol is pure grain alcohol, also known as rubbing alcohol, it can be found in drugstores. It has way less smell that the regular alcohol found in the supermarkets.

* If you buy a 4 oz. bottle, you can use it all.

It’s the same procedure: Whisk gently all the liquids together in a clean bottle and let it sit for 3 days. Keep the bottle open in the dark during the evenings and then closed in a light place during the days.

Here at my place we have a coffee scent in the kitchen and dining room, for stimulating the palate. But, you can have any citrus smell or basil, mint, cinnamon, any seasoning that stimulates you.

In the living room we have a sweet ginger scent for a welcoming atmosphere, and in the toilet, a lavender one, for freshness and a cleanliness feel.

In my bedroom I use a spray scent called bamboo, from a Brazilian bed linen company. The smell feels like being hugged by your bed linen! I love it!

Check our Pinterest for combinations of aromas.

Just remember, if you share a place with more people, you all have to agree on a scent that feels good for everyone. Or just make a soft one for yourself in your own bedroom.

All the best for today!

See you soon,

Alice.
